Hey, why did your prices go up?(2007)

Wow, this is a tough one, because I understand that collectors of miniatures, like everyone else, like to find a
deal.  They love finding beautiful miniatures at a low price, who wouldn't.  Yet, there comes a time when an
artist is not selling his or her work, they're giving it away.  I say this because after calculating the time and
effort that goes into a single figure, I've discovered that I've been cheating myself.  For instance, let's look a
figure that takes 10 hours from start to finish.  If that figure sells for only 35.00 on eBay, then I've made the
equivalent of only 3.50 per hour!  That's less then the national minimum wage!  Now, I know I'm not to the point
of selling figures for $200 a pop (like staff painters get for their commissioned work), but I need to start
charging more for my work based on the following reasons...
  1. The average figure, from taking it out of its blister pack to spraying it with Dullcote, takes an average of
14 to 25 hours to complete.  If I were to price that figure at $5.50 per hour it would cost $77.00 to
$137.00!  I know folks on eBay probably won't spend this on a figure (some might and for you I am
sincerely grateful).  Therefore, I lower the price of an eBay figure by some 36% of the actual cost.
  2. Over the past year and a half I have consistently won first place in the local competitions, with the latest
accomplishment being a Best In Show, which was earned competing against some of the best in the
business.  Those individuals, upon seeing my work, also agreed that I needed to charge more that I was
hurting myself by offering my figures at such a low price.
  3. In order for Painting Raven Studios to remain financially viable I need to make enough per month to help
out with the bills here at home while I finish my Master's Degree and get my teaching license. I know
many of you would hate to see this website and my work disappear forever because I had to get a
    regular 9-5.

So, I think, if you really look at the price of the figure versus the time it takes to finish it, you'll see that even at
$50 or so dollars, you're getting one heck of a deal.  So, please, don't be scared away by the price, look at the
detail and the work that went behind it when making your decision to buy.  Thanks for understanding.
Okay, you say you've won all these awards, but where's your Golden Demon?  That's
the only award that counts, right?

Oh, now you've gone and done it....  The primary reason I don't have a Golden Demon, or Slayer Sword for
that matter, is because the competition doesn't come to Denver.  Frankly, I would love to be able to make the
trip to Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, or Baltimore to compete but I have a very strict budget since my family is
really only on a single income.  Now, that's not say that were I to go I would automatically win, who knows, but
I'd have a pretty good chance, I think.  In reality, the Golden Demon competition is not the only competition for
miniatures, its only the most publicized.  The conventions and competitions here in Denver, for example, are
growing in size and the last one, GenghisCon XXVII, attracted the likes of Jennifer Haley, Anne Forester, Doug
Jones, Marike Reimer, Lilliana Troy, and Derek Schubert, just to name a few.  These people are staff painters
and Golden Demon winners themselves and considered some of the best in the business.  So, in short, I think
I can hold my own now in a competition and someday I might get that Golden Demon award, but you don't
need one to be a great painter.
